Prof. Nikolay A. Khalturinskiy is Head of the of Polymer Burning Laboratory at the N.N.Senenov
Institute of Chemical Physics (ICP) of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He graduated from Moscow
Phisico-Technical Institute, Department of Molecular and Chemical Physics in 1967 and then began to
work as a research officer at the ICP. He defended a thesis degree in 1972 and Dr.Sc. degree in 1984
from ICP. The main fields of his scientific activities are high temperature pyrolysis, polymers burning
and mechanism fire retardants action. Prof. N.Khalturinskiy is the author of several reviews and over
400 articles in various fields of chemical kinetics, physical and polymer chemistry.

Ecologically Harmless Water- Based Fire-Proofing Paint
Fields of Application:
Industrial and Civil Construction Engineering and Transport, fire-proofing of timber, plastics and metals constructions in industrial and residential buildings, transport vehicles.
Description:
The fireproofing paint can be easily applied with a brush. As a rule two layers of the coating for the total coating thickness 300-400 mkm - that requires 0.4 kg of the paint for 1 sq.meter. Subjected to the fire the paint increases its thickness by 20-30 times and is transformed into thick carbonized layer of coked foam. The coked foam is heat resistant, incombustible and serves as heat isolation preventing further fire spreading. Combustible timber with the coating withstands direct contact with open fire for 30 minutes - without catching fire. The coating weight loss after foaming and burning in not higher than 9%.
In contrast to existing analogues, the newly developed fire-retardant material is water -based, it does NOT contain organic solvents, Halogen and Antimony compounds used in ordinary fire-retarding materials, and does NOT release any toxic, fire- or explosion-hazardous substances. This is especially important advantage for living rooms protection because Antimony combinations are harmful for breathing system and may cause heavy poisoning. The new coating is ecologically harmless at all stages - manufacturing, applying and foaming, when subjected to fire. The paint production technology is waste less, it utilizes cheap raw materials and standard equipment. The fireproofing coating can be colored with different pigments and can be used as a decorative paint.
Advantages:
1. The new coating is ecologically harmless and non-toxic at all stages of its production, coating and utilization, it is free from organic solvents, Halogen and Antimony compounds;
2. Has high fire-retarding properties;
3. High adhesion to different protected materials, its adhesion to timber is 0.15 Mpa.
4. Simplified coating procedure;
5. Waste less production technology utilizing rather cheap raw materials.
Stage of Development:
The industrial technology for the fire-retardant coating manufacturing has been developed. The paint has successfully passed certification tests at independent organizations.
Pilot manufacturing of the coating has been organized in Russia (up to 1 ton per year).
Further R&D works recently completed allowed to improve the basic coating composition and to enhance the coating adhesion to metals, its resistance to moisture and light, to prevent cracks formation.

6. License contracts on technology transfer;
7. Joint R&D works on the development of fire-retarding coatings to the customer’s requirements, its additional testing and certification;
8. Joint manufacturing in Russia.
